Extensions
So how big do you want to go? You can build an extension under ‘permitted development’ rules, as long as it’s less than 50% of the area of land your house sits on. That 50% excludes the area covered by your home, but does include any existing additions and outbuildings.
Adding space
So will you create an open plan kitchen diner, a spare bedroom, a modern home office with fitted furniture or a home gym? Many extensions can be carried out within permitted development rights. And depending on the footprint of your home, you could have a large space downstairs and one to two bedrooms upstairs plus an additional bathroom. This will create valuable extra space for a growing family, an elderly family member, guests or home workers.

Making the most of the space in your home can actually change the way you live too. With home working so popular after lockdown, having a dedicated space means that home workers aren’t working on the kitchen table or cooped up in a dingy box room.
